Pet memorial ideas: gentle ways to remember them

Updated 2026-10-27

Losing a pet is losing a family member. There is no correct way to grieve, but small rituals help many people. Here are fourteen ideas, from the very simple to the more involved — pick whatever feels right.

Things you can do today

Write down five things they did every day — the sound of their paws, the spot they slept, the way they greeted you. Gather your favourite photos into one album. Light a candle at the time you used to walk or feed them.

Make a short tribute video from your favourite photo. Seeing a gentle blink or wag again can be comforting, and it gives the family something to share.

Keepsakes

A clay paw print or nose print (many vets offer this), a framed portrait, their collar on a hook by the door, a lock of fur in a small locket, or a custom illustration.

Rituals and seasons

Plant a tree or flowers where they liked to lie. Remember them on their birthday or adoption day. On October 27, the day many families remember pets during Día de Muertos, build a small ofrenda with their photo, bowl and marigolds.

Giving back

Donate their unused food and blankets to a local shelter, sponsor a rescue in their name, or volunteer for a day. Many people find that helping another animal is the kindest way to carry the love forward.

When to get help

If grief stays heavy for many weeks, pet-loss support lines and counsellors can help. In the US the ASPCA and many veterinary schools run free pet-loss hotlines.
